Employee of the Year Demonstrates Unshakable Spirit
Pensacola, Fla. (November 17, 2016) – Tan “Tommy” Huynh is among 236 people with disabilities who works aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola under a contract with Global Connections to Employment (GCE). He has been selected as the Employee of the Year for 2016. Huyhn was selected from a pool of approximately 1,800 GCE employees working in 13 states and the District of Columbia.
Huyhn works in the scullery (dish room) at the single largest galley in the U.S. Navy. Much of the production is made possible by people with disabilities. They are part of a team that serves approximately 9,000 meals to service members and military personnel each day. Huynh came to the NAS Pensacola in 2015, but the path to employment wasn’t easy.
When he was 8 years old, Huynh witnessed a horrific crime that resulted in the death of his mother, brother and a sister. Years later, he was involved in a motorcycle accident that left him with a disability. Following a long recovery that included several surgeries, nearly a year in a rehabilitation facility and 15 months in a wheelchair, Huynh was hired by GCE. Since then, he has emerged with an unshakable spirit. He is an inspiration to his co-workers and supervisors. The food services project manager says, “Tommy always has a genuine smile and is sincerely happy to see everyone.” Huynh, who often works holidays along with his co-workers, will ensure Thanksgiving dinner is provided at the NAS Pensacola galley next week.
