Professional growth journey: Ashtin Lafountain

As clinical manager and counselor forLakeview Center’s Short‑Term Residential Treatment (SRT) program, Ashtin Lafountain plays a vital role in supporting Individuals during recovery from a mental-health crisis.

Ashtin’s journey into mental health was deeply personal. Like many in the field, her interest in psychology began to better understand her own experiences and those within her family.

That passion brought Ashtin to Lakeview Center in 2012, when she completed her graduate counseling internship at the former West Florida Community Care Center state hospital in Milton. Under the supervision of Meredith Olsen, Ashtin found not only her footing, but also a deep appreciation for Lakeview’s mission and impact.

After graduating, the opportunity arose to return to Pensacola in 2019. She knew Lakeview was where she wanted to be. She began working at Cabot House, gaining valuable experience with youth in a foster home setting, then transitioned to the Adult Outpatient Program (AOP), before she returned to working with Meredith Olsen—this time as a clinical manager in SRT.

“When I saw there was an opening, I jumped at the chance,” she said. “Meredith’s leadership style, clinical expertise and advocacy for both clients and staff have always inspired me.”

Today, Ashtin supervises a diverse team that includes therapists, case managers, peer specialists, recovery team coordinators, education and recreation staff, as well as graduate interns.

“It’s incredible to watch someone come in during a crisis and leave grounded, hopeful and prepared for what’s next,” Ashtin said.

One aspect of residential work that often surprises people is how much healing happens outside of traditional therapy sessions. “Some days, I’m overseeing treatment team meetings,” Ashtin shared, “and other days I’m tie‑dyeing shirts, planning a spring party or helping someone pick out new clothes. Those moments matter. They help clients feel human again.”

Looking ahead, Ashtin hopes to pursue training to become a qualified supervisor, allowing her to formally mentor and support clinicians working toward licensure. “Helping others grow is one of the most meaningful parts of this work.”
