Donnie’s journey through Road to Recovery

Donnie’s journey through Lakeview Center’s Road to Recovery program

A few years ago, Donnie found himself at one of the lowest points in his life. Struggling with fentanyl addiction, he was living on the streets in Pensacola, begging for money and unsure where to turn.

“I had nowhere else to go,” Donnie said. Word of mouth ultimately led him to Lakeview Center’s Road to Recovery program, a 46-bed residential substance misuse treatment program in downtown Pensacola that helps individuals recover from addiction.

Like many people entering treatment, Donnie struggled to accept help. But over time, he began to trust the process and the people who were invested in his success. “Then I opened my eyes and accepted criticism,” he said. “Getting help changed my life.”

A turning point came about two weeks into the program. “I had a spiritual moment with God,” Donnie said. “I started smiling again.”

From that point forward, he began making different choices and embracing the opportunities available through treatment.

One of the most meaningful parts of his recovery experience was the relationship he built with his counselor, Robert Smith. “The one-on-one sessions with Smith were the most helpful,” Donnie said. “He helped me open my eyes and realize that I didn’t have to be right all the time.”

Donnie spent 60 days in the program, developing recovery skills and building a foundation for a healthier future. The support he received helped him see possibilities beyond addiction and gave him the confidence to take the next step.

While still in treatment, Donnie learned about employment opportunities with Global Connections to Employment (GCE), which provides meaningful career opportunities for individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment. GCE is a sister company to Lakeview Center, part of the LifeView Group family of nonprofits.

Today, Donnie has been employed with GCE since April 2025 and works in landscaping. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue growing within the organization.

When asked what he would tell someone who may be hesitant to seek treatment, his answer is simple. “Give it a chance. You never know.”

Taking that chance led to recovery, stability and a renewed sense of purpose. Donnie’s story is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest moments, help is available, and recovery is possible.
